“A mystical exploration into the duplicity of landscape and sunlight.” In Espejismo (Mirage, 2025), Miguel Betancourt captures the moment when reality and reflection become one. Through a palette dominated by solar yellows and deep blues, this 94 x 61 cm artwork uses a mixed media technique of watercolor and wax to create a translucent atmosphere. The mountain and its reflection form a geometric and spiritual unity, inviting the viewer to question where the earth ends and where the illusion of water begins.
Espejismo (Mirage) is an invitation to observe the landscape not as something static, but as a living and mutable entity. In this piece, Betancourt resorts to symmetry to question the boundaries between the real and the imagined, the solid and the liquid.
In-Depth Artwork Analysis:
Duality and Reflection: The work is organized around an invisible horizontal axis. The mountain, drawn with firm and dark strokes, finds its echo in vibrant water. The “mirage” is not merely the physical reflection, but the transfiguration of the landscape through color.
Materiality and Transparency: Rice paper allows watercolor to create delicate glazes, while pencil defines almost calligraphic structures. The wax finish unifies these textures, endowing the piece with a luminous depth that seems to emanate from within the support.
Andean Chromatism: The bold use of yellow in the sky and foreground symbolizes the omnipresence of the equatorial sun, whose energy blurs contours and saturates the senses.
“In ‘Espejismo (Mirage)’ I sought that instant where sunlight strikes the water and the landscape seems to unfold. It is a tribute to the clarity and mystery of our paramos.” — Miguel Betancourt.

“In Miguel Betancourt’s work, color is not mere filling; it is a living language that rescues the transparency of wax paper to remind us that light is the soul of form.”
